IMG_0176Hi. My name is Charles (better known as Charlie) and I’m from “sunny” of North Wales.

Let me tell you a story that changed my perspective of sports. At first, I am a person who was raised with a limited knowledge regarding the game that is really popular across the globe. I used to say the game was kind of boring, pathetic and other words in order conceal my complete ignorance of the said sport.

Three years ago, I got an invitation from a friend that started to change how I view the sports.

What was it? Field hockey is truly amazing! And now I can say that I am one of the biggest fans of the said game!

The game is easy to understand and straightforward. The game is one of the sports from the hockey family. Yes, you can think of ice hockey and etc.  The game consists of two teams that are both composed of eleven players including the teams’ goalies. The teams are playing against each other by moving a ball into the opponent’s goal with the use of a hockey stick.

The game is kind of low-scoring but mind you, that there is life that can be seen in the game. Unlike other games, there is no excess fouls or other rules that need to be implemented every now and then. Even just by merely watching it, it appears that it is a game like soccer but with the use of a hockey stick (sounds like soccer with a twist!). It can also be played either on a grass field or a turf field.

What I find most exciting in the game is the penalty corner. The attacking team gets a free centring pass from the corner which can turn into a shot on goal.

The first one is this restriction on the attacking team that the ball must travel outside the scoring circle then be brought back into the circle before a shot may be taken. This can be done in a blink of an eye.

The second obstacle is about the physical obstacle which refers to the opposing team. Five defenders, including the goalkeeper, need to line up behind the end line at least five meters away from the ball. The spectator value comes from the fact that most teams choose to start their defenders inside the goal itself. Then, when the ball is played by the attackers, they essentially charge the shot.

The penalty corner is so dangerous that field hockey’s international governing body (which is the International Hockey Foundation or FIH) has implemented a rule that the first shot that results from a penalty corner should not exceed the height of the backboard which is about 18 inches high, when it gets to cross the goal line. As far as I know, there is no sport that is so dangerous that rules have to be made on the height at which a ball can travel.

The game has become so popular that it is being played on international competitions such as the Olympic Games, Champion’s Trophy, World Cup and World League which I do not get to miss. Not to mention that Pakistan made it as their national sport.

So this is the reason why I made this blog to let everyone know how awesome the game is. Why don’t you try it?
