Regional Academies

The North Wales Regional Academy operates out of NEWI in Wrexham and Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay (headed by Steve Edwards, formerly the Head Coach of the Wales Under 21 Men’s team).

There are two age groups represented. Under 15 and Under 17 for both boys and girls.Training is mixed and it is from these sessions that selection for national sides and the regional age group sides will be made.

Part of the new WHU Player Pathway, the Academies are designed to give talented athletes greater opportunity to receive regular quality coaching on quality pitches amongst a group of equally talented athletes.

Concentrating on the improvement of core skills executed consistently under pressure, the sessions will act as excellent preparation of athletes for long term success on the international stage.

To represent Wales at any level in hockey, players must fulfil certain criteria. Players may qualify by birth, parentage (either), grandparentage (any one) and residence. There are different residence periods depending on the age of the player. To find out more, check out this eligibility form.
