AGM Notice 14.5.09

The North Wales Men's AGM will be held at NORTHOP HALL HC at 7.30 pm on THURSDAY, 14th MAY 2009.

The AGM will be divided into two sections. The first will be a Special General Meeting to approve changes to the constitution. The second will be the AGM proper.

A number of key issues will be discussed so please could all clubs send at least one representative, preferably two. In particular, a proposal has been made regarding the future operation of the League so attendance is crucial if we are to continue to develop the League over time to become a competitive adult competition.

The Agenda for both the SGM and AGM are below. The minutes of last year's AGM are also included. A financial report will be tabled at the meeting.

Hockey Summer Camps @ Glyndwr University

Glyndwr University will be holding a hockey summer camp in August between the 18th and 21st. For more information, click on the link to download the flyer. All information can be got from Sam White at Glyndwr on 01978 293589. Email: s.white@glyndwr.ac.uk

WHU AGM

The WHU AGM will be held at the Maldwyn Leisure Centre, Newtown on Sunday, 5th July 2009 starting at 14:00. Please could ALL clubs send TWO representatives to this meeting as it has been a struggle getting the AGM this far north.

The WHU is also reviving the Certificate of Merit so if anyone feels that somebody is deserving of this title, then please take note of the criteria below and get in touch with the WHU at Cardiff.

Certificate of Merit Criteria

A Union Certificate of Merit may be awarded to individuals for distinguished service or exceptional contribution to Welsh hockey over a period of at least 7 years (for Union members) or at least 10 years (for non Union members).

Any individual or group within Welsh hockey may nominate an individual for the award. All nominations should be accompanied by a simple CV setting out the reasons why the individual should be awarded a Union Certificate of Merit.

The Board shall determine who should be in receipt of the award. Not more than 6 awards shall be made in any year. Recipients of the award will be announced at the Union’s AGM and preferably the award will be presented at that meeting. Each recipient shall receive a formal certificate detailing the nature of the award signed by the president of the Union.

Finally, there will be a proposal to increase fees at the AGM. The WHU would like to point out the following about affiliation fees:

"A full review of other similar Governing Bodies (both hockey and non-hockey) has been undertaken with surprising results. Scotland charge £30 per senior member compared to our £20 with U-18’s being charged £15 (£8). Ireland charge a team fee of €412 but no individual fee (Welsh equivalent on a side comprising of purely seniors would be approximately £250). Welsh NGB’s charge £30 (Netball) or £25 (Judo).

With the WHU as a whole having approved the 4 year strategy it was felt that a gradual increase in rates to eventually match other NGB’s would be in order. Bearing in mind the current financial climate and the likely increase in insurance premiums it was agreed that the rates should be: Seniors £23, Youth £10, Intermediate £7 and Minis £4.

We are also considering the various options of introducing a non-playing membership. This would be available to those committee members and drivers who do not participate in any way (playing, managing, umpiring or coaching) but are still involved. Insurance cover would be included and further information will be made available in due course."

April News (13/04/09)

The past month has seen a lot happen in the world of North Wales hockey. We have held successful RAF Careers tournaments at both school and youth level (more on these soon), clubs have completed their league campaigns in the English pyramid with varying degrees of success and the season reaches its crescendo with the Glyndwr University North Wales Premier, Shield and League Cup finals which will be held on Sunday, 26th April.

There are exciting plans for developing North Wales hockey next season but which are still in the preliminary planning stages. In addition, we can look forward to the excitement that is the Euro Nations Trophy at WRexham in August. The region is planning a number of ancillary events that will hopefully take advantage of this tournament.

On a more practical level, the Committee meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, 14th APril) is postponed until Monday, 20th April. The minutes of the previous meeting can be downloaded along with the agenda for this month's meeting.

Hockey Summer Camp at Glyndwr University

A hockey summer camp will be held at Glyndwr University, Wrexham between the 18th and 21st August 2009 for boys and girls aged 11-16. All abilities are welcome and participants will receive coaching from international players.

After a fun day's hockey, there will also be fun evening activities e.g. awards, disco, Wii competitions!

En suite accommodation, All meals provided.

£220 per person

Important Information

As you will be aware by Emails that have been sent over the last month, we have decided to play only the semi finals on 29 March 09 instead of hold a finals' weekend. This is to ensure that any clubs with outstanding English league fixtures can play them on 28 March 09. North Wales Men's Hockey is seeking clarification with the English Leagues about priority for games outside the League window. The Finals will be held on Sunday, 26th April at Glyndwr University.

Please note that outstanding fixtures for the North Wales League can be staged in April.

Finally, the AGM will be held on Thursday, 14 May 09 at Northop Hall HC as The Plough's function room is booked up.

Euro Nations Wrexham 09

Planning for the Euro Nations is continuing apace. More information will be sent to clubs in due course to tell them how they and us all can help make this event a real success for North Wales. In the meantime, sign up for event updates at the Welsh Hockey website (click on the picture) and also BOOK your tickets now on-line for the week's events.

February Meeting Notes (11/2/09)

The meeting notes of Feb's meeting are available here.

Next meeting of Executive (5/2/09)

The next meeting of the Executive Committee will be on Monday, 9th Feb at the Plough, St Asaph. The meeting will start at 7.45pm. However, given the current weather conditions, at least here in Wrexham, we may have to reschedule.

The meeting notes from the last meeting in January are available here. Agenda to follow over the weekend.

Important information regarding Cups (5/2/09)

Please could all clubs take note of the following advice regarding the staging of North Wales Cup fixtures: All games must be played on the dates stated on Fixtures Live as the Finals' weekend is now fixed for 28/29 March at Glyndwr University. Some clubs have a number of preliminary fixtures and it is essential that these Sundays are stuck too. They may only be moved if both clubs agree and an email is sent by both teams to Adrian Bennett confirming the change in arrangements.

Also, please could clubs with teams in the Premier Competition forward a list of 10 first team players who will not be eligible to play in the Shield or League Cup to Adrian Bennett.

Northop Hall come third in National Indoor Competition (5/2/09)

Northop Hall HC came third in the National Indoor Tournament held in Merthyr Tydfil last Sunday.

Despite having only the bare 6 players, the side did North Wales proud as the region's only representative and saw off the challenge of Bridgend and Cardiff Medics.

Hall ran perennial favourites Swansea Bay close in a 6-5 thriller and only a 4 goal burst saw the Flintshire team go down to eventual winners, Cardiff University.

For a full report see Northop Hall's website while a list of all the results can be found on the WHU website.

Pictures of the event can be found at http://www.fidopics.co.uk.

IMPORTANT CLUB LETTER!

Cup Draws for North Wales Competitions available!

The draws for the League Cup, Shield and Premier Cup have all been drawn and put on Fixtures Live. Click on the League link and select Current Competitions to find out more.

The Semi Finals and Finals for all competitions will be held on the weekend of 28/29 March 09 at Glyndwr University.

Notes of December Meeting available (4/1/09)

The notes of December's meeting are now available. The next meeting will be on Monday, 12th January 2009 (where has this decade gone to?) at the Plough, St Asaph (weather permitting!).

North Wales Schoolboy Tournament

An excellent afternoon's hockey was had at the Alun School, Mold where 10 teams from 7 schools across North Wales took part in the first North Wales Schools Invitational Tournament.

The standard was extremely high and the final between Hawarden HS and Eirias HS was so close that the teams could not be separated even after a period of "golden goal". The trophy was, therefore, shared.

Thanks to Lee Ible, Development Officer for NE Wales for arranging and organising the tournament so efficiently. All the boys enjoyed the experience and it is hoped to run another tournament in the near future.

Further pictures will appear on the Schools page in the near future.

Age Group Results

North Wales put out three sides against its South Wales counterparts on 16 Nov 08 at Swansea. The results were as follows:

U14s - 0-10

U16s - 3-7

U18s - 3-3

Given that the fixture did not take place last year, it was pleasing that all games were fulfilled and that boys had an opportunity to test themselves against the South in front of national coaches. Well done to all that took part!

Craig Williams, the U16 and U18 coach is attempting to obtain further fixtures this season. Watch this space for further details as and when they are confirmed. It would also be great if parents, players could email any pictures of these games as I am not always able to go. Email me at jon.upton@northophall.net with your shots.

Notes of November Meeting & Date of Next Meeting (7/12/08)

The next meeting of the Committee will be tomorrow, 8/12/08. Agenda can be downloaded here. The notes of the November meeting can also be downloaded.

It is an important meeting tomorrow as we are discussing how best to promote the game in North Wales on the back of the Euro Nations in Wrexham 2009, doing the Cup Draws and beginning the review of our current consitution and league/cup rules. The available consitution and competition rules are available from the Downloads page.

Important Information (11/11/08)

A few important issues arose from Monday's committee meeting.

First, there is a training session for all Age Groups this Friday at Glyndwr University (NEWI) between 7 and 9. This is the last training session before Sunday's games versus south Wales. Good luck to all taking part in the session.

Second, please could all clubs taking part in the junior leagues for U11s and U13s please send payment to Matt Pritchard. The cost is £160.

Third, all League games must be played even if games are postponed. Points cannot be claimed in the event of a postponement.

It was disappointing that only two people were booked on the Core Skills workshop arranged by Lee Ible at Glyndwr University which meant it had to be postponed. Lee will try and run it again in the New Year and it is to be hoped that clubs will make every effort to send people. A similar event on the Wirral attracted 62 people. Clubs should note that the workshop is not a traditional basic skills session but the latest techniques and is useful for both coaches and players.

Finally, as you may know, the Euro Nations takes place in N.Wales at Wrexham in August. Planning is underway but can all clubs encourage its members to volunteer. It is the senior men and it will be a great opportunity to market the sport in the region as it will attract local press attention. Any ideas about how we can take advantage of this, let me know by email.

Age Group Results v Shropshire (7/11/08)

The North Wales U14 and U16 teams played their Shropshire counterparts on Sunday, 2 November 2008 at Glyndwr University. The U16s won 4-1 which delighted the watching parents and coaching staff while the U14s played well in going down 1-0.

Both games saw excellent hockey from the boys with some eye catching performances from individual players. This augurs well for the upcoming games against the South on 16th November at Swansea.

Further information can be found on the Age Group page. Click on the Youth link to access this part of the site.

Age Group News (20/10/08)

Timings of N v S games at Swansea, Sunday, 16th November.

  1. U18: 11am
  2. U14: 11.30 start
  3. U16: 12.30 start

After discussions with South Wales, the age group qualification date is 1st September or school years. Therefore, if juniors are in years 7,8,9 they qualify for the U14s, if they are in years 10 and 11, U16s and in years 12 and 13, U18s. So, juniors should attend sessions according to this criteria. The lists will be updated to reflect this.

Secondly, the age group games on Sunday, 16th November, will take place in Swansea this year and not Cardiff. I am reliably informed that travelling to Swansea is similar to travelling to Cardiff in terms of time. The benefit of Swansea is that the University has two water-based ATPs there.

Finally, the region has a game scheduled for the U14 and U16 squads against Shropshire on 2/11/08 at Glyndwr University. The U14s will push back at 10.30 and the U16s at 2.15.

MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 2008

Core Skills Workshop (30/9/08)

Please find attached a poster and application form for the Core Skills Workshop, being held on Friday 7th November, 7-9pm @ Glyndwr University. It would be great if the posters could be displayed in your clubs and mention to anyone you think would benefit from the course.

Please note that the cost is £20 not £30 as it may say on the application form. The course is brilliant for any coach of any team and any level, so wether you are a beginner or experienced in your coaching, everyone will benefit.

Mark Bateman, Senior Wales International and England hockey JRPC coach will lead the session and be showing the latest drills that are being used by England and GB hockey to improve core skills.

Topics to be covered:

  • Hitting
  • Receiving
  • Ball Carrying
  • Elimination Skills

The session will be practical based, so please come willing to participate in the drills!

Please forward this on to whoever appropriate and display/advertise/promote this event as much as you can.

All applications and cheques need to be returned direct to the WHU.

Hockey Camps at Half Term (28/9/08)

NE Wales Performance Development Centre (28/9/08)
The WHU wishes to invite your club to nominate young players from school years 9-12 (aged 13-17) for the NE Wales Performance Development Centre (PDC) at Glyndwr University, Wrexham, which will be starting up again on Monday 13th October from 7.00-8.30pm. A NOMINATION FORM is available.

The sessions will run through into December and will start up again in January for a further 6-8 weeks. Each session will cost £3 per player.  The PDC will once again open its doors to U13s during the Summer Term.

This PDC is being led by coaches from Northop Hall and Wrexham Hockey Clubs but coaches from other clubs in the North East area are expected to get involved, so that the PDC develops players and coaches simultaneously.  If the PDC is dependent on coaches from just these clubs then it will only be a matter of time before they run out of steam.  Therefore, please let me know if you wish to get involved or know of coaches who would like to help out.

Next Meeting of Executive (28/9/08)

NEWI North Wales Hockey Finals - Winners

Congratulations to all who played in an enthralling Finals' day at NEWI on Sunday. All the games were close with two ending in the drama and heartbreak of penalty flicks. The results are as follows:

Premier Northop Hall
1
3
Wrexham
Shield Northop Hall 2s
2
2
Bangor City
(Northop Hall 2s win on 4-3 on flicks)
League Bangor University 2s 2 2 Colwyn Bay 3s
Bangor University win 4-3 on flicks

For a full match report, go to the Cup Page for more details and pictures.

Update on Semi Final Results (26/4/08)

A great day's hockey at NEWI saw a number of close games and others that were not quite so close as the last 4 in all competitions were whittled down to the finalists who will all return tomorrow to compete in the NEWI North Wales League Cup, Shield and Premier Cup finals. The results were as follows:

Premier Cup

Bangor University
1
4
Wrexham
Rhyl
3
5
Northop Hall

Shield

Bangor City
2
1
Newtown
Wrexham
2
3
Northop Hall

League Cup

Colwyn Bay
5
2
Wrexham
Bangor Uni
8
1
Dysynni

This means that the two top teams in North Wales, Northop Hall and Wrexham will compete in the Premier Cup competition tomorrow at 3pm. While Wrexham eased past Bangor Uni, Hall were made to work for their victory with a storming second half performance from Rhyl seeing them come back from 3-0 down to level with 7 minutes to go. However, two quick goals, including one flick saw Northop Hall go through to face their arch rivals.

The Shield too will see a cracking game with Northop Hall 2s facing Bangor City. While Bangor City's league position is way below Hall's, the two sides have faced each other in the Shield competition in the past two seasons. Hall defeating City in the final two years ago and Bangor gaining revenge in the quarter finals last year. This should be a close game particularly after Hall edged past local rivals Wrexham in the last game at NEWI today.

The League Cup will also pit two free-scoring teams in Bangor University 2s and Colwyn Bay 3s in the first match of the Finals' day at 11am. Both comfortably disposed of their opponents in today's semis and another good match is in prospect.

New teams that are competing at this event include Wrexham and Llangollen meaning that nearly all North Wales clubs are represented in this vital development for boys' hockey in the region.

NEWI North Wales Cup Draw announced (8/11/07)

At the Executive Committee meeting, the draw for the NEWI North Wales League Cup was made. Wrexham will host Northop Hall in the preliminary round while it will be "town versus gown" in Bangor as Bangor City host their University rivals in the main QF draw. For the full draw go the Cup page.

NEWI North Wales Shield and Premier Cups (8/11/07)

Because of the early finish to the league season this year and because national finals are in May, it has been decided to hold the Shield and Premier Cups in March/April. The semi finals and finals for both are likely to be held over a weekend in April as part of a North Wales Festival of Hockey. Watch this space for more details.

Cancellation of the annual North V South age group fixture on 18/11/07 in Cardiff (8/11/07)

It is with regret that North Wales Men's Hockey announce that they will be unable to fulfil the long standing annual fixture against their southern counterparts on 18 November 07 at WIS, Cardiff. It knows that this will be a disappointment to many but a number of key individuals stood down in the summer, including a number of the coaches. Getting coaches and managers in place has taken longer than anticipated and owing to other commitments, it has not been possible to hold trials at the various age groups. Therefore, the decision was taken on purely practical grounds. The Executive wish to assure all involved that this is a temporary measure and normal service will be resumed next year. However, there is a possibility that the region will have fixtures against Wirral Schools on 9th December 07 at U16 and U18 level.

Indoor News (8/11/07)

The second season of the NEWI Indoor League will get under way on Sunday, 25th November 07. The Region is also pleased that, for once, the national indoor final will be held in the North in January 08. Our region’s representatives will be Northop Hall, Wrexham and Rhyl in a 6 team tournament. The North has been successful nationally and internationally in the past with Northop Hall representing Wales in Europe on a number of occasions.

WHU hierarchy visit our region!(24/9/07)

The WHU held a popular "roadshow" event at the Daniel Owen Centre, Mold on Monday 24th September. This followed a similar event at Caernarfon on 3rd September.

The event was extremely successful as the WHU outlined its plans to support club and youth hockey as well as help talented hockey players to rise through the levels.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to thank Mike Leatt, Chris Brewer, Chris Marriott and Beth Fisher for their efforts. It is a long way up from the wastelands of south Wales, particularly Cardiff, and the future is looking positive for Welsh hockey.

NEWI North Wales Junior Leagues hit a positive note (23/9/07)

The new junior league, sponsored by NEWI, started with an excellent U11 tournament held at Ysgol John Bright, Llandudno on Sunday. Dysynni, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Rhyl and Northop Hall took part in an enjoyable event. The children enjoyed themselves and the standard was good. Many thanks to all who took part.

The next tournament is on Sunday, 21st October 2007 at NEWI, Wrexham. The tournament will be organised by Wrexham HC.

For details of the league schedule, go to the Youth page. Alternatively, contact Dave Bickley, NE Wales Regional Development Officer on 07809 523886 or email him at d.bickley@newi.ac.uk.

New Junior Leagues to start in North Wales (1/8/07)

Following the exciting news that NEWI has sponsored the region's hockey activities, the WHU(NR) is pleased to announce that new junior boys' hockey leagues will be established from this coming season.

The leagues will be run on a monthly tournament basis. The first tournament will be staged by Colwyn Bay on Sunday 16th September. Each club who participates will take it in turns to organise the tournament which will normally take place on the third sunday in every month. Pitch hire and refreshments will be covered centrally.

A letter will be sent out to all north Wales clubs shortly with further details. In the meantime, contact David Bickley at NEWI if you want an informal chat.

Northop Hall fall short in Premiership play off (13/5/07)

North Wales Cup winners, Northop Hall, lost 4-0 to Cardiff HC at NEWI on Sunday in the north/south play-off to determine who represented Wales in Europe next season. The major difference between the two sides was fitness and the level that Cardiff regularly play at but the match again proved that the north continues to produce some first class hockey players as Pete Smith, Gareth Davies, Paul Cochran, Ian Randells and James Hawker all had fine games.

Financial Boost for region (11/5/07)

NEWI agree to sponsor North Wales Men's competitions for three seasons from 2007/8 to 2009/10. It is hoped that this will allow the region to plan future developments such as junior leagues to consolidate on the work being done by its representative clubs.

North Wales Seniors draw with Shropshire (8/5/07)

A representative side drawn from the major clubs in the region drew with a strong Shropshire side 2-2 at NEWI on 8/5/07.

Northop Hall win North Wales Premier Cup (21/04/07)

The re-arranged North Wales Premier Cup Final between Northop Hall and Rhyl at NEWI ended in a comfortable 5-1 victory for Hall. Rhyl took the lead from a deflected short corner strike and led at half time. However, three goals in five second half minutes saw Hall seal the game and saw them through to the Premiership final against the winners of the south Wales cup on Sunday, 13 May 07 at NEWI.

North Wales League and Shield Winners (18/03/07)

Congratulations to Bangor University 2nd XI and Wrexham 2nd XI who won the League Cup and Shield respectively at NEWI on Sunday, 18 March 07. The Premier Cup between Northop Hall and Rhyl was abandoned due to inclement weather 20 minutes into the first stanza. This will be rescheduled for a later date in April
